If your laptop turns on but the screen is black, a replacement screen is not automatically the answer. The laptop may have a display fault, a Windows problem or a hardware fault that stops it completing startup. Lights and fan noise tell you it has some power; they do not prove it has started successfully.
This guide helps you describe the symptoms, try a few simple checks and decide when to arrange laptop repairs in Stockport.
Laptop turns on but screen is black: which symptoms matter?
- No logo or picture at any point: note whether there are lights, fan sounds, beeps or a repeating flashing-light pattern. The display and the startup hardware both need consideration.
- A logo appears, then the screen goes blank: tell us exactly when the picture disappears. This helps separate startup and Windows-related problems from a screen that never displays anything.
- The screen goes black after signing in: a Windows or graphics-driver problem is one possibility. It still needs diagnosis if it keeps happening.
- An external monitor works: this is a useful clue about the laptop’s own display, cable or related circuitry, but it does not identify a failed part by itself.
- The picture changes when the lid moves: stop repeatedly flexing it. Mention any stiff hinges, cracking sounds or separating casing.
If there are no lights or other signs of power, our laptop won’t turn on guide is the better starting point.
Simple checks before booking a repair
If there has been a liquid spill, visible battery swelling or a burning smell, stop using and charging the laptop and arrange an assessment. The checks below are for a laptop without those warning signs.
Check brightness and remove the dock
Try the keyboard’s brightness-up control. Disconnect docking stations and external display adapters so you can check the laptop on its own. If the picture returns, tell us which accessory was connected when the fault occurred.
Try the Windows graphics reset shortcut
If Windows appears to be running but the display is blank, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. Windows may beep or briefly flicker as it resets the graphics driver. This cannot repair damaged hardware. Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting guide explains this and other Windows-specific checks.
Check an external display, if available
Use a known-working monitor or TV, a suitable cable and the correct input on the display. A USB-C connection only helps if the laptop port and adapter support video output. Record whether you see a startup logo, the Windows sign-in screen or nothing at all. No external picture is not proof that the motherboard has failed.
Does a black screen mean the laptop needs a new display?
No. Screen panels, display cables, connections, graphics circuitry and startup faults can produce similar symptoms. A cracked panel or ink-like damage points towards physical display damage, but a completely dark screen needs further checks.
Replacing a panel without checking the cause can leave you with the same fault. Our laptop screen replacement guide explains the differences between display faults and the factors that affect a quote. Where diagnosis identifies a board fault, motherboard repair may be an option.
Protect your files before trying a reset
A black screen does not, by itself, tell you whether your files are damaged. Avoid factory resets or reinstalling Windows simply to see whether they help, particularly when you have files that are not backed up. If an external screen lets you use the laptop normally, back up important documents before further troubleshooting.
Tell the workshop which files matter and whether you have a backup. Access can depend on the condition of the storage and any encryption. Do not put passwords or recovery keys in an online enquiry.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my laptop screen black when the power light is on?
The light confirms some power is present, but the laptop may not have completed startup. A display fault, a Windows problem or another hardware fault could be responsible. Note whether a logo ever appears and whether an external monitor works.
Can a laptop with a black screen be repaired?
Many causes can be repaired, but the options depend on the diagnosis and model. We explain the fault and provide a quote so you can decide whether repair makes sense.
How much does a black-screen laptop repair cost?
There is no single price because the symptom can have different causes. We offer free diagnosis at our Stockport workshop and confirm the repair quote before carrying out the work.
Will repairing the screen delete my files?
A screen replacement does not normally require erasing the storage. However, a black screen can involve other faults, so file access and preservation cannot be guaranteed. Tell us about important data before any work begins.
