This Steam Deck OLED screen replacement at our Stockport workshop restored a handheld that had lost its built-in display after the screen cracked. It still worked when connected to a dock, but the damaged screen meant it could no longer be used normally as a handheld.
The fault: a cracked screen, but still working docked
The customer brought the Steam Deck OLED to AC Computer Warehouse with a cracked screen and no picture on the device itself. Docked operation was still possible. That distinction mattered: this was not a device that had stopped working altogether.
For this repair, replacing the damaged display was the route to restoring handheld use. A Steam Deck with a blank screen can need a different repair depending on the fault, so the symptoms and physical damage need to be assessed together.

Steam Deck OLED screen replacement: inside the repair
Stripping down the handheld
We opened the Steam Deck and stripped it down to access the display assembly, removing the motherboard as part of the process. The workshop photos show the progression from the opened handheld to the more fully dismantled unit.

Removing the cracked screen and old adhesive
We heated the old screen to release it from the housing, then removed the damaged assembly. Once it was out, we cleaned away the old adhesive so the replacement could sit properly in the frame.
This preparation is an important part of the job: fitting the new screen is more than simply swapping a visible piece of glass. The old bonding material needs to be removed and the housing prepared before the new display is installed.

Fitting the new display and reassembling
With the housing prepared, we fitted the replacement screen and reassembled the Steam Deck. The photo below shows the replacement display and its ribbon cable before installation.

The result: a working handheld again
After fitting the new screen, we tested the Steam Deck and confirmed it was fully working again. The built-in display was restored, so the customer no longer needed to rely on a dock to see a picture.
The main photo shows the replacement screen displaying the startup logo during testing, with its protective film still in place.

Frequently asked questions
Can a Steam Deck OLED work docked with a broken screen?
Yes. This particular Steam Deck still worked when docked even though its cracked built-in screen showed no picture. Replacing the screen restored handheld use. Docked operation alone does not establish the cause of every display fault.
Did this repair need a replacement motherboard?
No motherboard replacement was needed for this job. We removed the motherboard during the strip-down and refitted it when reassembling the device after the screen replacement.
How much does a Steam Deck OLED screen replacement cost?
Contact us with your model and the symptoms for an assessment and quote. We confirm the cost before carrying out repair work rather than applying another console repair price to a Steam Deck screen.
