Laptop completely dead? Don’t panic
A laptop that won’t turn on is stressful — especially if your work, photos or coursework are on it. The good news: “dead” laptops are often very repairable, and sometimes it’s something simple. Here are the seven most common causes we see at our Stockport workshop, a few safe things you can try yourself, and when it’s time to let us take a look.
1. A flat battery or a charging fault
If there’s no light at all when you plug in, start with the basics: try a different power socket, check the charger cable isn’t damaged, and make sure the plug is fully seated. Leave it charging for 15–20 minutes before trying again — a completely flat battery can take a moment to respond.
2. A faulty charger or charging port
Chargers fail more often than the laptop itself. A frayed cable, a damaged tip, or a loose charging port can stop power getting in. If your charger’s light is off, or you have to hold the cable “just so” to charge, that’s a strong clue. A charging-port repair is a common, straightforward fix.
3. It’s powering on — but the screen is black
Sometimes the laptop is running (fans spin, keyboard lights up) but the screen stays black. That points to a screen, cable or backlight fault rather than a power problem. Shine a torch at the screen at an angle — if you can just make out a faint image, it’s usually the backlight or screen.
4. Loose or failed memory (RAM)
If the laptop powers on but won’t get to the logo or beeps repeatedly, RAM can be the culprit. It’s a cheap, quick fix when that’s the cause — and something we check as part of diagnostics.
5. A stuck power button or drained static
Try a power reset: unplug the charger, remove the battery if it’s removable, then hold the power button for 30 seconds. Reconnect and try again. This clears residual charge and revives a surprising number of “dead” laptops.
6. Liquid damage
Spilt a drink? Don’t keep trying to turn it on — that can cause more harm. Power it off, unplug it, and get it seen quickly. We can open it up, clean and inspect for corrosion, and repair what we can. The sooner it’s looked at, the better the chances.
7. A failed drive or a board-level fault
If none of the above helps, it may be a failed SSD/hard drive (the laptop powers on but can’t boot) or a motherboard fault — a power circuit, a short, or a failed component. These are exactly the repairs many shops turn away, but our in-house micro-soldering and board-level work means we can often fix what others replace.

Safe things to try before you bring it in
- A different plug socket and, if you have one, a different charger.
- A 30-second power-button reset (charger unplugged).
- Charge for 20 minutes before retrying.
