MacBook Won’t Charge? Common Causes & How to Fix It

MacBook not charging? Work through these

A MacBook that won’t charge is worrying, but it’s often a simple fix. Here are the usual culprits, safe things to try, and when to let us take a look.

1. The cable or adapter

The charger is the most common failure. Check the cable for fraying (especially near the ends), try a different socket, and if you can, a known-good Apple charger. A third-party or underpowered charger can also fail to charge under load.

2. A dirty or damaged charging port

Dust, lint and debris build up in the USB-C or MagSafe port and block a proper connection. Look inside with a torch. If the port is loose, wobbly or damaged, it’s a common, straightforward repair.

3. “Service recommended” battery

If the battery health says “Service Recommended” or the Mac only runs when plugged in, the battery may be worn out (they’re good for a set number of charge cycles). A battery replacement brings it back to a full day’s use.

4. An SMC/system glitch

Sometimes it’s just software. On many MacBooks, a power reset clears it. We can advise the correct reset for your exact model — safely.

5. A board-level charging fault

If none of the above works, the fault may be on the logic board — a charging IC or a component that’s failed, often after a knock or a liquid spill. This is exactly the kind of repair many shops turn away, but our in-house micro-soldering means we can usually fix it rather than write the Mac off.

Before you bring it in

  • Try a different Apple charger and socket.
  • Gently clean the charging port (powered off).
  • Note the battery health (Ⓐ menu → About This Mac → More Info → Battery, or System Settings → Battery).
