Black screen or “no signal” from your console? Start here
Switch on your PS5 or Xbox, hear the fan spin and see the light come on — but the TV just says “no signal” or stays black? Before you blame your telly, know this: the most common cause is a damaged HDMI port on the console itself. It’s one of the faults we repair most often at our Stockport workshop, and the good news is it’s very fixable.
How to tell it’s the HDMI port
It’s likely the console’s HDMI port if:
- The console powers on (fan spins, light is on) but there’s no picture.
- You’ve already tried a different HDMI cable and a different TV or HDMI socket — still nothing.
- The picture flickers, cuts out, or only appears if you wiggle or hold the cable at a certain angle.
- You can see bent, pushed-in or missing gold pins inside the console’s HDMI socket.
If a different cable and TV make no difference, the problem is almost certainly inside the console.
Why HDMI ports fail
These ports take a lot of daily stress. A knock to a plugged-in cable, moving the console while it’s connected, pets and little ones, or simple wear over the years can bend the delicate pins or crack the tiny solder joints that hold the port to the mainboard. Once those connections break, the video signal can’t get out.
Why you can’t just “swap the cable” or the port yourself
The HDMI port is soldered directly onto the console’s mainboard — there are dozens of microscopic connections underneath it. Replacing it isn’t a plug-in job; it needs micro-soldering with the right tools and a steady, experienced hand to remove the old port, clean the pads and fit a new one without damaging the board. Done wrong, it can turn a simple repair into a much bigger one — which is exactly why it’s worth having it done properly.
How we fix it
- Free diagnostics — we confirm it’s the HDMI port (and not something else) before anything else.
- A clear, fixed quote — you’ll know the exact price before we start, with no-fix, no-fee on applicable repairs.
- Board-level replacement — we remove the damaged port and fit a brand-new one at board level, then test the video output on the bench with your console before it comes back to you.
- Your games and saves are safe — an HDMI port repair doesn’t wipe your storage or account.
Most are turned around in just a few working days, depending on parts and workload — we’ll give you a realistic timescale once we’ve seen it.
