Stuck trying to get music off your iPod? You’re not alone
Here’s the frustrating bit Apple never fixed: iTunes (and the Music app) only ever copied songs onto your iPod — never the other way. So if your computer died, your iTunes library vanished, or you just want the tracks off an old iPod Nano or Classic, you hit a wall. The songs are right there on the device… but plug it in and there’s no obvious way to get them back.
The music is recoverable — iPods store every track internally, just with scrambled file names and the metadata hidden away in a database. You simply need the right tool to read it. So we built one, and made it completely free: NanoVault — free iPod music backup for PC, no iTunes required.
What NanoVault does
NanoVault copies every song from your iPod into a tidy folder on your PC — with real track names, artwork and playlists. No more gibberish: you get properly named files, sorted into Artist / Album / Track folders, exactly as they should be.
It’s free, open-source, and offline — no accounts, no analytics, no “unlock the rest for £29.99.” (If you’ve tried other iPod recovery apps, you’ll know the drill: they copy 50 songs, then demand payment for the rest. NanoVault just backs up your whole library.)
Which iPods does it work with?
- ✅ iPod Nano — 1st to 5th generation
- ✅ iPod Classic
- ✅ iPod Video, iPod Photo, iPod Mini
- ⚠️ iPod Shuffle — best effort
- ❌ Not iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPod Nano 6th/7th gen (those work differently)
Is it safe for my iPod? (Yes)
This is the important part: NanoVault opens your iPod read-only, so nothing on it is ever changed, moved or deleted. It only reads the music and copies it to your PC. It even verifies every copied file with a checksum so you know the backup is complete and intact. Your iPod comes away exactly as it went in.

FAQ
Can you really get music off an iPod without iTunes?
Yes. The songs live on the iPod itself — iTunes just hides them. NanoVault reads the iPod directly and copies everything to your PC, no iTunes needed.
Will it delete or change anything on my iPod?
No. NanoVault opens the iPod read-only — it only copies music off, and never writes to or alters the device.
Does it work on an iPod Classic?
Yes — iPod Classic, plus Nano 1st–5th gen, Video, Photo and Mini.
Is it actually free?
Completely. It’s open-source with no paid “pro” version and no locked features — just an optional donation if you’d like to support it.
What about an iPod Touch or newer Nano?
Those aren’t supported (they store music differently). NanoVault is for the classic click-wheel iPods.
My iPod won’t turn on or won’t connect — can I still get the music?
Maybe — if the iPod has a flat battery, a dodgy port or a failing drive, it may just need a repair first. That’s exactly what we do. in Stockport can look at a dead or damaged iPod and recover the music where possible — free diagnostics, no-fix, no-fee. Pop in or use our UK mail-in service.
